Created by best friends Tamara Ingham & Jasmine Yarbrough, Mara & Mine is the footwear label everyone’s talking about. The two combined their unique talents in the industry – Tamara, a fashion stylist and Jasmine a fashion model, to create a modern flat shoe range full of attitude and intrigue. Adored by influencers and fashion folk alike, each season, Mara & Mine pushes the boundaries on the classic shoe with a modern twist
We chat to one half of the label (and Brisbane native), Jasmine to find out more about the Mara & Mine journey and her success in the industry.
How did you get into the fashion industry?
I was an international model for more than ten years and had the privilege of seeing and working with the best in the business. It was all a great experience.
At what point did you decide to start your own brand and what was the process?
I didn’t want to stay on the catwalk. My business partner and I saw a gap in the market for flats. And instead of just talking about it we both went for it. The label was born with the last half of our first names.
What are your roles in the business?
It depends on the task. But it’s always collaborative. We create together. We build the shoes together. From the start to the finish the shoes are a reflection of us. So, we see the process through. Together. From choosing materials through to when they walk out the door anywhere around the world. They are us.
Describe your creative process?
We choose a place we have travelled together or a place we desire to go to. We start brainstorming with mood boards, materials and colour ways. We then send our specs to the CAD team so we can see it visually. From there we add and cut details from the line. The sampling process begins and we go through every detail with our sample room. We travel and spend a week with our sampling team to go over all details and see the first prototype come to life.
What are some of the hurdles you’ve had to overcome in creating your brand?
Anyone in small business will tell you it’s a hard process. You have a vision. You have a dream but the reality of a dream is incredibly difficult to achieve. Every hard knock we’ve had we’ve learned from so you keep moving forward. But passion, hard work and commitment to the dream get you through.
What are the three personal traits that have got you to where you are today?
Loyalty. Determination. And fun.
What do you wish you knew early on in the Mara & Mine journey?
Spend more time getting across the business basics. It might cost you a little more at the start but it will save you money in the long run. And learn from the experts so you can use them less down the track.
Finish this sentence: I wish fashion was…
Not so corporate. Not so safe. I wish it was less about the sale and more about difference. Fashion always has a way of working itself out though. Evolving and moving with the times. It’s bigger than any one brand or business. It has an energy of its own. That’s why I love it so much.
What has been a pivotal moment in your career?
I think for me it was when Cara Delevingne was seen wearing our Jem Skull slippers. We had so many people want to buy the Slippers at the time we couldn’t keep up with the demand and stores were contacting us. That was definitely a pivotal moment in our career.
Stuck in traffic, where does your mind wander?
Definitely to what my next meal will be!
What’s the most influential piece of clothing that you own?
My Saint Laurent leather jacket.
Lipstick or Mascara?
What one item should women really invest in and throw some money at?
A pair of shoes or a handbag.
Which celeb wardrobe would you love to steal?
