Born in Byron Bay, Biologi is the world’s first 100% active single-ingredient skincare range that is revolutionizing the industry. But, Biologi isn’t just another ‘green brand.’
The range was founded by renowned skincare chemist, Ross Macdouglad who is on a mission to prove that through science, natural and organic products are effective. We sat down with Biologi’s Managing Director, Lucy Kuper, to learn more about the brand.
1. For those who are unfamiliar with Biologi, tell us a bit about the brand and why it was created.
Biologi is an Australian skincare brand that offers the only 100% active, water soluble plant extract range in the world. Each of the Biologi serums are extracted from a single native plant; finger lime, Davidson plum and Kakadu plum. Using a revolutionary extraction system; Biologi mimics the plant’s internal closed process to extract serums that work in the bottle as they do in their unique cellular environment. These active-ingredient serums have a profound effect on the skin, changing it on a cellular level and delivering on the promise that the product truly works.
The Biologi plant serums were created by renowned skincare chemist Ross Macdougald, who was sick of the conventions of the industry and set out to prove that natural and organic can be more effective than synthetics.
2. How is Biologi different to other skincare brands?
Biologi is unique for several reasons – it not only offers a world first in skincare (being the only serum in the world that offer 100% active organic plant extract serums) but it is the first skincare product in the world that contains natural, stable, active vitamin C. Using our revolutionary extraction system Biologi has been able to mimic the plant’s internal closed process to extract serums that then work in the bottle as they do in their unique cellular environment.
Then there’s the fact that Biologi is so natural, you can actually drink it (not many brands can claim that)! Biologi is fast gaining a cult following because it truly works. Loved by model Jordan Simek who credits the brand for clearing up her acne, influencers like Elle Ferguson, Oceana Strachan and Jess Kent have all also sung the brand’s praises.
3. What is the founder, Ross Macdougald’s background?
Ross is an experienced industry chemist whose mission is to prove through science that ‘natural’ and ‘organic’ not only work, but are better than synthetic manmade chemicals. Born and educated in Sydney, Ross moved to Byron Bay to work with Thursday Plantation, and Southern Cross University. Ross has developed over 300 products and formulated active ingredients for large cosmetic companies. Driven by demand from the industry for similar extracts, Ross pioneered his plant extraction method and launched Plant Extracts, supplying 100% active plant extracts to industries, which significantly outperformed synthetic alternatives. However the journey did not stop there, as Ross became frustrated at the low levels these plant actives were added to products, often only for marketing and labelling claims. Wanting to change the game, Ross launched Biologi, the world’s first ever 100% active single ingredient, organic, pure plant serum that works. With a strong ethical commitment to deliver effective products to women that are good long term for their skin, Ross is committed to revolutionising skincare for all.
4. Why is it so important to use single-ingredient, 100% active, skincare?
It’s important because it truly works and your skin doesn’t need anything else! Most skincare products these days are made up of filler ingredients that don’t actually have any benefit to the skin. So every day, millions of people around the world are putting harmful chemicals on their skin and not actually seeing any benefits from it. Most women likely have a bathroom cabinet full of products that claim to be miracles in a jar, yet are continually searching for the next best thing because they haven’t found a product that works. These products are usually made up of minimal active ingredients (in many cases, only 2%) and then rest is just filler ingredients like water and emulsifiers that are of no benefit to the skin. Biologi is 100% active ingredients where your skincare routine can be cut down to cleanse, exfoliate, Biologi. Biologi replaces your moisturizer, day cream, night cream (and the list goes on) cutting down and simplifying your routine. Biologi is 100% natural and organic, which means you’re also putting less chemicals on your skin.
5. Can you give us any information about the studies showing Biologi’s effectiveness?
Biologi taps into the theory of Epigenetics by changing skin on a cellular level, permitting us to ‘turn back on’ skin cells and allow them to work at their most effective level. Through Epigenetics, we now have the ability to understand a human’s genetic makeup and create ground-breaking skin care formulas that impact cellular health and we can look at helping change gene expression patterns over time. Research has shown that epigenetic mechanisms are crucially connected to the aging process and by understanding how certain foods, activities, or behaviors can epigenetically combat aging, we are on the path to improving our health, skin, and restoring beauty.
6. Can you briefly explain Biologi’s unique extraction process?
It is top secret! But in the most brief sense, we have been able to create a process that sees us capture 100% of the active ingredient and bottle it to then work on your skin as it does in its unique cellular environment.
7. What can people expect from using Biologi?
People can expect to forget everything they’ve ever been taught about skincare. Over the years, skincare giants have done a brilliant job at essentially brainwashing consumers into believing they need to put chemicals on their skin for a product to work. Brands have continually developed more and more products to make the skincare routine complex, when in reality it doesn’t need to be.
8. Where is Biologi made?
Biologi is proud to be made in Australia, ethically sourcing ingredients from the Byron Bay and NSW regions of Australia. Biologi serums are made of 100% active extracts of Australian natives Kakadu Plum, Davidson Plum & Finger Lime. Biologi source all of our ingredients locally and sustainably and control their whole production process from plant to bottle.
Kakadu Plum is a traditional source of bush tucker and has been used as an antiseptic remedy for the Indigenous people across the Arnhem Land for thousands of years proving it’s nutritional and healing properties.
Sourced from the Northern Territory, Biologi’s wholesaler arrangements are with legitimate companies whose product is harvested by those living in the Aboriginal communities.
It’s common to have many links in a supply chain but they source their product directly from the wholesaler cutting out all the middlemen who would normally make a profit during this process.
Davidson Plum is a native rainforest fruit of sub-tropical-coastal New South Wales and North-East Queensland. Biologi primarily source our Davidson Plum directly from a grower in the Byron Bay hinterland making it organic while contributing to the sustainability of local agriculture.
The superiority of this product means it doesn’t lose its nutrients when it’s frozen, so their supplier also sources the fruit frozen from Queensland.
The Finger Lime is widespread in the Northern Rivers of New South Wales where Biologi products are manufactured and a strong relationship with a Finger Lime farmer provides the perfect opportunity for them to use locally-sourced fruits and quite literally put them directly into the bottle.
9. The Biologi line currently consists of three serums; do you have any plans to release more products in the future?
Yes we do! We’re excited to announce that we’re about to launch our new Bqk Radiance Serum, that specifically targets pigmentation. Maintaining our single plant ingredient roots, Biologi’s new Bqk Serum is a morning and night ritual combination that includes two separate serums to help improve the appearance of skin pigmentation. The Bqk morning serum (Kakadu Plum) is applied as part of your morning skin care routine and the Bqk evening serum (Quandong) before bed.
Kakadu Plum is the fruit source of Bqk morning serum chosen because of its potent natural plant-based vitamin C content, as well as its strong pigment inhibiting phytoactives- ellagic and gallic acid. Kakadu plum is used to reduce the visible signs of ageing from sun damage, reduce the appearance of pigmentation and brighten the overall appearance of the skin. The Kakadu plum is sustainably sourced from Aboriginal communities in WA & the NT (WA & NT).
Quandong is the fruit source for the evening ritual, chosen because of its potent levels of Tryptophan, Ferulic acid, Rutin and Chlorogenic acid. Rutin & Chlorogenic acid is critical to reducing redness and pigmentation, while tryptophan and ferulic acid work together to prevent further pigment from forming. Quandong is sourced from Broken Hill NSW
10. What is a fact about the skin and/or skincare that people would be surprised to know about?
People would be surprised by many things which has a lot to do with how things are labelled. A big one that stands out in my mind is the term ‘naturally derived’ seen on a lot of skincare products. The term ‘naturally derived’ was created by some clever marketing folk who understand the power of clean and green beauty. In a basic sense, ‘naturally derived’ usually refers to ingredients that have been sourced from nature, but have gone through a process which means they can no longer claim that it is natural. The ingredient has usually gone through a chemically enhanced process to deliver an unnatural form of the natural ingredient.
11. If someone could only pick one product from your range, what would it be and why?
The Biologi Bf Serum is a hero product in our range because it works on all skin types and can be used on all areas of the body and face for hydration (even on your lips and hair)! The Biologi Bf Serum is produced from the extract of Australian finger lime. This completely natural ingredient helps the skin retain moisture, suppleness and elasticity. Not only hydrating, the serum helps to decrease spots, blemishes, redness, sun damage, cellulite, dryness, bumps and flaking. What’s more, it is great for sensitive or irritated skin too.
12. What would you say to someone who is sceptical about single-ingredient skincare?
Try to forget any assumptions you might have and give it a try – you won’t be disappointed. Our serums are offering a radically different approach to skincare, and when you realise that Biologi replaces your moisturiser, night cream, day cream, eye cream, simplifying your skincare routine to cleanse, exfoliate, BIOLOGI. You won’t look back.
