Body+Soul Beauty Editor Janine Phillipson spills the secrets of how to achieve a clear complexion. There’s a reasonable chance you’ve noticed brown spots on your hands as you’ve grown older. While they’re often blamed on age, these pigmented areas are more specifically caused by sun exposure, and are also known as sun, liver and hyperpigmentation spots, or freckles. “So-called ‘age spots’ are dependent on the amount of sun exposure and skin type,” cosmetic and skin cancer physician Dr Susan Austin says, adding that they form on areas that are more easily stimulated to form pigment, resulting in a darker spot.
Budget Not An Issued?
Laser pigmentation removal is the go-to treatment to blitz these spots, and you can see a difference after one treatment and even more after two to four (laser costs from about $99 per treatment, try clearskincareclinics.com.au). I trialled it for this story and I’m a convert. The backs of my hands looked speckled with sun spots and various other marks, all of which have either disappeared or faded dramatically.
What You Need To Know:
Austin recommends seeing a doctor before commencing any treatment to check that spots are sun damage, not skin cancer or melanoma. Once you’ve got the all-clear, have a consultation to determine the most suitable treatment for your skin as pigmentation can also be treated with intense pulsed light (IPL) and broadband light (BBL) treatments, microdermabrasion and peels. Wearing sunscreen is imperative after having laser treatment to reduce the chance of repigmentation.
Hand creams also benefit from the extensive science of skincare, and there are products designed for all skin needs, so look for one with corrective qualities that are specific to you. As with your facial skincare routine, it’s also important to always apply sunscreen. “Whatever you use on your face – serum, exfoliator, sunscreen – use it on the back of your hands as well,” facialist Jocelyn Petroni says. “They’ll look so much better.”
What You Need To Know:
While the hand cream option is the least expensive, it takes longer to see results, and not all pharmacy products are created equal. Our panel put these products to the test.
