Asking your boyfriend to apply fake tan to your back may be a thing of the past because edible gummy bears that tan your skin exist, and yes, they are exactly what they sound like. The product—released last week—was developed by Scottish/British company, Utan & Tone, and claims to be “the world’s first edible tan supplement.”
According to the supplement description on Utan & Tone’s website, “Tan Gummies help to accelerate and enhance the perfect bronze tone to pale skins, with and without the sun.” For optimum tanning results, adults are advised to suck two Tan Gummies per day, two weeks prior to sun exposure. Alternatively the gummies can be used on their own for a light-golden colour that will gradually develop over three to four weeks.
Of course, the ‘perfect bronze’ is an oxymoron, given that any sun-induced tan is extremely damaging to your skin; accelerating ageing and significantly increasing your chances of developing melanoma.
So, how exactly can these little gummy bears produce a glowing summer tan from within? Well, apparently Tan Gummies “allow potent actives to be held in the buccal cavity for a considerable time, resulting in ‘direct absorption’ through the membranes in the cheek walls.” Feeling a little suspicious? So are we.
A quick scan through the ingredients list shows mostly natural elements: sucrose, glucose, vitamin C, vitamin A and zinc. The ‘tan’ that the gummies claim to produce could be a result of high levels of beta-carotene (Vitamin A, once ingested), which can influence the skin’s colour, however this usually results in a yellow or orange tone to the skin.
At best, these tanning gummies are a cute alternative to your daily multivitamin. Our advice; stick to your trusty fake tan and always wear SPF 50+ when exposed to the sun—your skin will thank you for it later.
